COCOBOD CEO Randy Abbey Sues NPP’s Abronye for GH¢20 Million Over Defamation
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Randy Abbey, has filed a defamation suit against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.
In a writ submitted to the Accra High Court on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Mr. Abbey is demanding GH¢20 million in damages. He argues that Abronye made false and damaging remarks about him during a radio discussion.
According to the writ, Abronye alleged that Randy Abbey personally travels to cocoa farms with his own chair, which he carries from Accra to meetings with farmers. He also accused the COCOBOD boss of replacing the institution’s Director of Finance with the intention of diverting funds “to the detriment of cocoa farmers.”
Mr. Abbey has strongly denied the claims, describing them as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation and diminish the trust and credibility he has built over his professional career.
“The defendant’s actions were calculated to erode public confidence and cause irreparable harm to the plaintiff’s dignity and image,” the writ stated.
Beyond financial compensation, the COCOBOD CEO is seeking a court order compelling Abronye to issue an unqualified apology and unconditional retraction of the alleged defamatory statements. He is also asking the court to grant a perpetual injunction restraining Abronye and his associates from publishing further defamatory remarks against him.
