King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, has issued a directive requiring the compulsory teaching of Ga and Dangme languages in all public and private basic schools across the Greater Accra Region, effective from the next academic year.
The mandate, aimed at preserving the cultural heritage and identity of the Ga-Dangme people in the face of rapid urbanization, has garnered widespread support as a move to revive indigenous languages and promote cultural continuity.
However, the directive has also raised practical concerns, including teacher shortages, logistical challenges in curriculum implementation, and questions about the extent of traditional rulers’ authority in influencing educational policy.

Social media reactions reflect both enthusiasm and debate, with many users calling for similar initiatives nationwide, while others highlight the feasibility challenges of rolling out the program across all schools.
Education stakeholders are expected to engage with the Ga Mantse and relevant authorities to discuss practical strategies for implementing the directive without disrupting academic activities.
