Prominent Northern New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure and influential grassroots mobilizer, Sule Binchera, has publicly switched his support from Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the lead-up to the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries.
The move, which has surprised many within party ranks, signals shifting alliances within the NPP’s northern strongholds, where both candidates are vying for influence ahead of the decisive internal contest.
Sule Binchera, a well-respected political strategist in the Northern Region, made the announcement during a local NPP engagement, praising Dr. Bawumia for his vision, humility, and track record in governance.
“After deep reflection and consultations, I have decided to rally behind Dr. Bawumia. He embodies the unity and progress our party and country need at this critical time,” he said.
A Strategic Realignment Within the NPP
Binchera’s decision to cross over to Team Bawumia has been described by analysts as a significant political development that may shift internal dynamics within the ruling party. Known for his ability to mobilize voters and influence opinion among the party’s rank and file in the North, his endorsement is expected to strengthen Bawumia’s regional base.
Political observers believe this switch could inspire other undecided delegates and regional influencers to follow suit, especially in constituencies where loyalty to Binchera runs deep.
The announcement also comes amid growing speculation about the behind-the-scenes lobbying and realignments taking place as candidates intensify their campaigns.
The Bawumia–Ken Contest Heats Up
Vice President Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong are considered the frontrunners in the race to lead the NPP into the 2024 general elections. While Bawumia commands institutional backing and enjoys support from many top executives, Kennedy Agyapong is known for his grassroots appeal and blunt rhetoric, which has won him a loyal support base.
Sule Binchera had previously backed Agyapong but explained that his decision to change course was based on “party unity and future governance considerations.”
“This isn’t about personal feelings or individual ambition. It’s about the bigger picture — the future of the NPP and Ghana,” he added.
Implications for NPP’s Internal Politics
With the NPP presidential primaries fast approaching, endorsements such as Binchera’s could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome. Both candidates are expected to intensify regional engagements, seek alliances, and solidify their support bases.
The Northern Region, in particular, remains a key battleground given its strategic voting population and symbolic importance to Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.
My News Ghana will continue to monitor internal NPP developments and the evolving dynamics as the party heads into what promises to be a competitive and defining primary.
