Government Moves Seized Excavators from Tema Port to Military Sites to Decongest Port
The government has launched a major operation to relocate all impounded excavators currently parked at Tema Port to designated military installations in Tema and the Shai Hills. The decision aims to decongest the port and improve security.
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), in a statement released on September 10, 2025, confirmed that the earth-moving machines—seized under national efforts to control mining equipment importation—will be transferred to military camps across the country. These machines will remain in custody until their owners complete customs and clearance procedures.
GPHA emphasized that while port space is critical for trade movement, the relocation will enhance efficiency at the Tema port. It also noted that all established customs clearance protocols remain valid. Once cleared, consignees will be directed to collect their equipment from the military locations. All transportation and custody costs will be charged to the equipment owners.
This action follows a June 2025 directive banning excavator imports without proper authorization, under the “No Permit, No Excavator” policy, part of the government’s intensified campaign against illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey.
