GPRTU, Drivers, and Traders to Stage Protest
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and its allied associations have announced plans to embark on a massive demonstration on Tuesday, September 16, to protest what they describe as the unlawful takeover of lands reserved for lorry stations at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) area in Accra by private investors.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, disclosed that the union will submit a petition to the Presidency, urging government to safeguard the lands earmarked for commercial transport operations.
The Concerned Drivers Association has declared its support for the protest, with its President, William Osei, calling on drivers to park their vehicles in solidarity. This move, organisers warn, could cause major disruptions to transport services and commuter traffic across the capital.
Market women have also joined the campaign, expressing fears that losing the lorry station space will devastate their businesses and livelihoods. They appealed directly to Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and First Lady Lordina Mahama to intervene, cautioning that thousands of traders and informal workers face displacement if the alleged encroachment is not halted.
According to organisers, the demonstration is intended to send a strong signal to both government and private developers about the seriousness of the situation and the determination of transport operators and traders to resist the takeover.
