Three police officers were shot dead and two others critically wounded on Wednesday during a domestic-related investigation in North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris confirmed that the suspected gunman was fatally shot by officers during the exchange of fire.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT). Aerial footage from the scene showed at least one injured officer being airlifted to hospital by medical helicopter.
As a precaution, schools in the Spring Grove Area District—located in the small town of about 2,500 residents—were briefly placed on lockdown. District officials later confirmed that no students or staff had been directly affected by the incident. Authorities stressed that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
According to Commissioner Paris, the confrontation unfolded as officers followed up on an investigation that had begun a day earlier. He noted that few details could be released at this stage due to the active inquiry.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro traveled to the area later in the day to meet with the families of the slain officers.
“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Shapiro said. “This kind of violence is not OK—we need to do better as a society.”
The governor also ordered all state flags across Pennsylvania to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen officers.
The FBI has deployed agents to assist state and local authorities with the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel expressed condolences in a statement:
“Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community.”
The identities of the slain officers have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
