Accra, Ghana – Fifteen out of the 23 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region have formally declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The MPs who endorsed Dr. Bawumia include Sammi Awuku, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Annor Dompreh, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, Charles Asuako Owiredu, Kingsley Agyemang, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Ida Adjoa Asiedu, Kwame Appiah Kodua, Duke Ofori-Atta, Michael Okyere Baafi, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, Kwame Addo Frempong, Laurette Korkor Asante, and Alexander Agyare.
Led by Kingsley Ahenkorah Marfo, MP for Achiase, the group said their decision reflects a firm conviction that Dr. Bawumia remains the NPP’s most viable choice to secure electoral victory.
“Our purpose is to endorse the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the flagbearership of the NPP for the 2028 elections. We are clear in our minds that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead us to victory,” Mr. Marfo stated.
The MPs argued that Dr. Bawumia, having served as one of Ghana’s most impactful Vice Presidents, has the political brand, humility, and unifying spirit needed to rally both the party and the nation.
They further claimed that many of Dr. Bawumia’s policy ideas, initially criticized by opponents, have since gained credibility.
“Changing him will be setting ourselves back by another 16 years,” Mr. Marfo emphasized, adding that the caucus was determined to consolidate support for him across the region and nationwide.
The endorsement signals the beginning of a grassroots and parliamentary mobilization campaign for Dr. Bawumia as the NPP prepares for internal primaries and, eventually, the 2028 polls.
