Twenty people were injured in southern Israel after a drone, reportedly launched from Yemen, struck the Red Sea resort town of Eilat, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and emergency responders.
The Magen David Adom emergency medical service confirmed that 20 victims were taken to Yoseftal Hospital, with two sustaining serious limb injuries. The IDF said efforts had been made to intercept the drone before it hit populated areas.
Israeli media have described the attack as a potential Houthi strike, although the Yemeni rebel group has not officially claimed responsibility. Live footage broadcast on local television and verified social media posts showed smoke rising from the impacted area, while a drone was seen flying behind buildings moments before the blast.
“IDF troops, alongside the Israel Police, were dispatched to the area after receiving a report of a UAV attack,” the military said. Helicopters were deployed to evacuate the wounded, and residents were advised to remain in protected areas for 10 minutes following alerts.
Eilat, a popular tourist destination, has been targeted in previous Houthi drone strikes. Earlier in September, one person was injured at Ramon Airport, and last week a hotel area was struck with no casualties reported.
The Houthis, an Iran-backed rebel group controlling north-western Yemen, have intensified missile and drone attacks against Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in the ongoing Gaza conflict. Israel has responded with air strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including Sanaa and the Red Sea port of Hudaydah, resulting in significant casualties.
If confirmed, this attack would be one of the deadliest Houthi drone strikes on Israeli territory, surpassing a July 2024 attack on Tel Aviv, which injured 10 people and killed one.
