Ghana has scored a major diplomatic victory as the United States has officially lifted the visa restrictions it imposed on the country in July 2025.
The decision restores eligibility for Ghanaians to secure five-year multiple-entry visas, along with other enhanced consular privileges.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the development on Friday, September 26, after receiving confirmation from US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges. This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote in a Facebook post.

Months of Negotiation Pay Off
The reversal follows months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Accra and Washington. The restrictions, which had limited Ghanaians to a maximum three-month single-entry visa, were introduced in July over concerns about visa overstays, particularly among students.
By reinstating the previous visa regime, the US has signaled renewed confidence in Ghana’s commitment to addressing the issues that led to the sanctions.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The decision has been widely hailed as a positive step toward strengthening Ghana–US relations. Analysts say the move could boost travel, educational opportunities, and business partnerships between the two countries.
