The Minority in Parliament has called for the resignation of the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, accusing him of mishandling negotiations with MultiChoice, operators of DStv in Ghana.
At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 2, Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee, Charles Owiredu, said the Minister had misled Ghanaians, wasted public resources, and failed to deliver on his promise of securing a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees.
“We of the Minority demand that, one, the Minister renders an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the waste of the nation’s time and resources on this venture,” Owiredu stated.
“Two, we call on him to refund the funds levied on DStv. And three, we deem him unfit to lead this strategic Ministry and therefore call on him to resign—or for His Excellency the President to relieve him of his duties.”
The Minority accused the Minister of abandoning his initial bold pledge of a 30% fee reduction, only to later hail MultiChoice’s ongoing “Step Up” promotional campaign as a government achievement. According to them, the campaign—running since January 13, 2025—was an independent corporate initiative, not the outcome of government negotiations.
Owiredu alleged that the Minister “fabricated” outcomes of discussions with MultiChoice, failed to answer critical questions on accrued fines, and “lacked the mental rigour” to lead the Ministry effectively.
Meanwhile, MultiChoice Ghana on Wednesday, October 1, issued a public clarification amid customer confusion over whether the government’s announcement was distinct from its latest promotion.
In the statement, the company said it:
- Fully supports the joint statement made by Minister Sam Nartey George regarding the value upgrade for DStv packages.
- Has begun implementing the upgrade, with a review committee set to reassess the initiative in three months.
- Will apply the offer to all DStv customers—new, returning, and existing—with no bouquet restrictions.
MultiChoice also apologised for misleading FAQs that appeared on its website, which created the impression of a contradiction with the Minister’s announcement.
The standoff has fuelled debate over the government’s handling of the matter, with the Minority framing it as a betrayal of public trust and calling for accountability at the highest level.
