Junior Doctors Declare Nationwide Strike
The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced a nationwide strike beginning Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to protest what it describes as months of salary arrears, suspended payments, delayed postings, and persistent unfair treatment by the government.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Louisa Afia Nkrumah, President of JDA-GH, and Dr. Rhoda Wun-nam Amadu, General Secretary, the Association disclosed that more than 200 junior doctors have worked for between 10 and 14 months without pay. It further revealed that the salaries of several medical officers already on the government payroll have been abruptly suspended without explanation.
The JDA also accused authorities of neglecting over 800 medical officers who have been awaiting posting for 16 months, despite multiple engagements and assurances from the Ministry of Health.
“Despite goodwill shown towards the government, no solutions have been offered. The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated,” the statement read.
Service Withdrawal Plan
According to the Association’s directive:
- Outpatient services will be withdrawn from October 7 to 9.
- Beginning Friday, October 10, emergency services will also be suspended until further notice.
- Current inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but no new admissions will be accepted.
The JDA stressed that it was left with no choice but to embark on the industrial action, adding that it holds the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana fully responsible for any disruption of healthcare services.
Call for Urgent Intervention
Health sector stakeholders, including the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and civil society, are expected to weigh in as the strike threatens to severely affect service delivery across public health facilities nationwide.
The Association has urged the government to move swiftly to resolve the crisis, warning that its members will not return to work until their grievances are addressed.
