Accra, October 4, 2025 — Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited has pledged massive logistical and operational support to strengthen the government’s National Sanitation Day initiative, reaffirming its commitment to sustaining nationwide cleanliness and environmental hygiene.
Speaking to the press during Saturday’s clean-up exercise, Ernest Kusi, Director of Monitoring and Service Quality at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, announced that the company will provide full backing to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across Ghana’s 16 regions.
The October edition of the National Sanitation Day, which took place in Accra, was led by the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, alongside the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ibrahim Ahmed. The exercise began at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) headquarters and extended through major locations including the Central Business District (CBD), Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and Agbogbloshie Market.

Participants engaged in sweeping roadsides, desilting drains, and clearing weeds from road medians, with Zoomlion’s personnel and heavy-duty equipment providing crucial operational support.
“Zoomlion is committed to supporting all MMDAs nationwide to ensure that the National Sanitation Day is not just a one-day event, but continues to advance the President’s Clean Ghana Agenda,” Mr Kusi affirmed.
He revealed that the company’s contributions include compaction trucks, skip trucks, gloves, nose masks, brooms, and sanitation workers deployed across municipalities and districts.
Driving Behavioural Change through Education
Beyond logistical assistance, Mr Kusi emphasized that sustained sanitation improvement requires a shift in public behaviour. He said Zoomlion is investing in public education campaigns, particularly through its Zoom Kids Programme, which teaches schoolchildren the importance of environmental hygiene.
“We believe sanitation is about lifestyle change. Through our Zoom Kids Programme, we educate schoolchildren to adopt good sanitation habits from an early age so they grow up valuing cleanliness,” he noted.
Mr Kusi also urged local authorities to strictly enforce sanitation bylaws, prosecute offenders who litter or dump refuse indiscriminately, and collaborate with the public to ensure lasting cleanliness.
“Together with education and enforcement, we believe we can achieve lasting change,” he said.
He encouraged citizens to acquire household waste bins for proper storage, noting that Zoomlion offers them at subsidised prices.

Government Calls for Attitudinal Change
Addressing participants earlier at the AMA forecourt in Tudu, Minister Ibrahim Ahmed underscored that the National Sanitation Day should not only be viewed as a physical clean-up effort but also as a transformational exercise in mindset and behaviour.
“Beyond the sweeping and cleaning, we must work on resetting our mindset and changing our behavioural attitudes,” he stated.
The Minister also appealed to the media to champion the national sanitation campaign by promoting positive habits and civic responsibility among Ghanaians.

Background
The National Sanitation Day was reintroduced by President John Dramani Mahama on September 6, 2025, at the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) in Madina. The initiative aims to mobilize citizens monthly — every first Saturday — to clean their surroundings and collectively sustain a cleaner, healthier environment.
Zoomlion’s renewed partnership is seen as a major boost to this nationwide effort, reinforcing the government’s goal of a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Ghana.
“Indiscriminate littering harms us all and pollutes our environment,” Mr Kusi reminded citizens. “Let’s change our habits so we can all enjoy the clean Ghana we desire.”
