The trial of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), begins today, Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at an Accra court.
The case stems from allegations that Wontumi engaged in illegal mining activities through Akonta Mining Limited, a company he is reported to own. The charges include mining without a licence and engaging in operations contrary to Ghana’s mining laws.
Wontumi appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday, October 6, following a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to assist in investigations.
He was subsequently granted bail of GH¢1 million ahead of today’s proceedings.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the case would centre on allegations of mining without proper authorisation. However, he maintained his client’s innocence, insisting that the facts would be fully addressed in court.
“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not to maintain innocence, but we are allowed to proceed and then present our defence,” Appiah-Kubi told journalists.
The trial has attracted widespread public attention due to Wontumi’s political influence and the government’s ongoing campaign against galamsey (illegal mining), which has caused significant environmental damage across the country.
