Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has agreed to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, with the deal expected to be finalised on Monday.
The 29-year-old, who had initially believed he would remain at Old Trafford, saw his situation change dramatically following United’s deadline-day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. With Altay Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton already in the squad, manager Ruben Amorim now has four senior goalkeepers at his disposal.
Onana, who earns around £100,000 per week on a contract running until June 2027, will reportedly earn more in Turkey, boosted by a signing-on fee and the country’s flat 20% tax rate. Sources close to the player say he is keen to maximise his income, partly to support his charitable commitments through the André Onana Foundation.
United’s absence from the Champions League also weighed into his decision, with players missing out on the 25% pay rise tied to Europe’s elite competition.
Club officials had previously indicated they were comfortable retaining four keepers, especially with Onana expected to be absent for up to six weeks during the Africa Cup of Nations starting December 21.
However, the Cameroonian has lost his starting spot to Bayindir this season and featured only in United’s Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby, where he was at fault for both goals in a 2-2 draw before a dramatic 12-11 penalty shootout defeat.
With the Turkish transfer window set to close on Friday, Trabzonspor moved quickly to secure Onana’s services, offering him a fresh start after a difficult spell in Manchester.
