An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another seriously injured following an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on immigration officers manning the checkpoint.
The deceased officer has been identified as Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed, who reportedly died instantly after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. His colleague, AICOII Oppong Daniel, also at post during the assault, suffered severe injuries to the jaw and back. He is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
Police investigators who arrived at the scene confirmed the recovery of AK-47 shell casings and a GIS service rifle, registered as GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646, believed to have been taken during the exchange.
A joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Municipal Police Commander for Gambaga, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS, was swiftly dispatched to secure the area and commence investigations.
Authorities have yet to establish the motive behind the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility. Security officials say they are pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
In a statement, the GIS and police assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that further updates will be communicated as the situation develops.
The Gbintri checkpoint is a critical security installation within the East Mamprusi Municipality, monitoring cross-border movement in the North East Region, which shares proximity with Ghana’s northern frontiers.
