The Manhyia Palace in Kumasi has been transformed into a centre of solemn tradition and cultural splendour as the royal burial rites of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, commenced today, September 13, 2025.
Hundreds of mourners, draped in red and black, thronged the palace courtyard to pay homage to the revered queen mother, whose reign and legacy remain deeply interwoven into the history and identity of Asanteman.
The atmosphere at the palace is steeped in symbolism, with the sound of traditional drumming, horn blowing, and dirges echoing through the grounds—signifying both grief and reverence.
The rites, known as Dote Yie, will span four days and will be led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, together with chiefs, royals, and custodians of Ashanti culture.

Dignitaries including government officials, religious leaders, political figures, traditional authorities, and well-wishers from across Ghana and abroad are expected to join the royal household during the ceremonies to honour the late Asantehemaa.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away in November 2023, was widely respected as the pillar of the Ashanti Kingdom and a mother figure to generations of royals. Her burial rites mark not only the passing of a queen mother but also the celebration of her remarkable service and influence in one of Africa’s most storied traditional states.
