Black Stars Rise to 75th in Latest FIFA Rankings
Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s Black Stars have climbed one spot in the latest FIFA world rankings, moving from 76th to 75th following their September 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.
Coach Otto Addo’s side earned a crucial point in a 1-1 draw against Chad before securing a 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium. The results not only strengthened Ghana’s hold atop Group I but also contributed to the upward movement in the global rankings.
Despite the improvement internationally, Ghana’s continental position remains 14th in Africa. Addo, however, hailed the progress as a positive sign ahead of upcoming qualifiers.
“The elephant in the room is always consistency, but we have shown resilience, and I believe we can improve further,” Addo said after the Mali win.
Ghana currently leads Group I with 19 points from eight matches, three ahead of Madagascar, while Comoros sit third with 15 points. Mali, previously considered Ghana’s main rival in the group, has slipped to 12 points.
The Black Stars are set to conclude their 2025 qualifiers in October with back-to-back games against the Central African Republic and Comoros, fixtures that could prove pivotal to Ghana’s bid for a fifth World Cup appearance since debuting in Germany in 2006.
Globally, Spain reclaimed the top spot in the FIFA rankings for the first time since 2014, pushing France to second and Argentina to third after a defeat to Ecuador. England and Portugal completed the top five, while Morocco remains Africa’s highest-ranked team at 11th.
The next FIFA rankings will be released in October, with the November update expected to play a crucial role in World Cup seeding, ahead of the draw in Washington on December 5.
