Salt Lake City, Utah — September 12, 2025 — Authorities have arrested Tyler Robinson, the man suspected of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University earlier this week. Officials say the breakthrough came after a family friend helped bring Robinson into custody.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed the arrest at a Friday press briefing, declaring, “We got him.” Cox praised the cooperation of Robinson’s relatives, noting that both a family member and a friend facilitated his surrender.
Family’s Role in Capture
According to Cox, Robinson’s own father reported that the 21-year-old had confessed to the shooting before being turned over to law enforcement. Another family member had earlier alerted investigators that Robinson had grown “more political” in recent years and expressed a particular dislike for Charlie Kirk.
Evidence and Motive
Investigators say they recovered bullet casings bearing inscriptions, including one that read “Hey fascist! Catch!”. Federal agents are examining the etchings as potential evidence of political motivation.
Robinson, who is from south-west Utah, is not enrolled at Utah Valley University, where the shooting occurred. Authorities released his mugshot following the arrest.
Swift Operation
FBI Director Kash Patel described the capture as “historic progress”, highlighting that Robinson was arrested just 33 hours after the killing. Patel commended the “decisive action” of local and federal officers as well as the cooperation of Robinson’s family.
Governor Cox echoed the sentiment, saying: “This tragedy shook our state, but thanks to his family’s courage and the tireless work of law enforcement, justice is moving forward.”
Next Steps
Robinson remains in custody as investigators work to establish a full account of the events leading to Kirk’s death. Officials have not yet announced the formal charges he will face.
