EC Sets September 30 for Tamale Central Parliamentary By-Election
The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially scheduled Tuesday, September 30, 2025, for the parliamentary by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency, following the untimely passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, which left the seat vacant.
A statement issued by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa confirmed that the by-election will be conducted in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, ensuring a transparent and democratic process.
Nomination Dates and Submission Process
The EC has designated Monday, September 8, to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, for the submission of nomination forms at the Tamale Metropolitan EC office. Prospective candidates can submit their documents daily between 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from the EC website (www.ec.gov.gh) between August 19 and September 10, 2025. Each candidate must submit their completed forms in quadruplicate, endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and supported by 18 other registered voters from the constituency.
Candidate Requirements and Filing Fees
Candidates are required to provide two postcard-sized photographs with a red background, clearly showing their full face and ears. The filing fee for the by-election is set at GH¢10,000 per candidate, while female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) benefit from a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.
The EC emphasized the importance of adherence to these procedures, stating:
“All completed nomination forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate. We urge the public to be guided accordingly.”
The upcoming Tamale Central by-election is expected to attract significant attention, as political parties prepare to field candidates to fill the parliamentary vacancy left by Dr. Murtala Muhammed.
