Tributes have poured in following the death of former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar, who passed away at the age of 21.
Vigar, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, joined the club at 14 after being scouted from his hometown side Hove Rivervale FC. He progressed through the youth ranks, scoring 17 goals in his debut season and earning a scholarship for the 2020–21 season. Despite a serious hamstring injury in his first year as a scholar, Vigar returned strong, scoring four goals in 18 under-18 appearances and signing professional terms at the end of the 2021–22 season.
Arsenal described him as “quick, powerful and fiercely determined,” praising his versatility across forward positions and occasional defensive roles. The club said he would always be remembered “for his love of the game, pride at representing our football club, and a character beloved by teammates and coaches alike.”
Following his time at Arsenal, Vigar had spells with Derby County, Eastbourne Borough, Hastings United, and Chichester City. He made 32 appearances for Eastbourne while on loan from Arsenal during the 2023–24 season and also spent the latter half of the 2022–23 season with Derby County’s Under-21 squad.
All his former clubs have expressed shock and grief. Derby County stated: “All at Derby County are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Vigar. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Hastings United said: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Billy Vigar. We will always remember his time at the club with fondness.” Eastbourne Borough added: “Both footballing and non-footballing staff are shocked and deeply saddened at the news, and our thoughts are with Billy’s family.”
The FA also extended condolences, sending “heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, loved ones and everyone at Chichester City FC at this incredibly difficult time.”
Chichester City confirmed the news on Thursday morning and announced that their upcoming match against Lewes would be postponed and rescheduled.
