A family narrowly escaped disaster on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, when their vehicle suddenly caught fire near the Peduase Presidential Lodge in the Akuapem South Municipality. The family was en route to Benkum Senior High School to escort their daughter.

The Mitsubishi Outlander, registered GE 3557-24, ignited around 6:00 p.m. while traveling toward Larteh, engulfing the car in flames within minutes. Firefighters from the Akropong Fire Station, led by ADO I Brenya, arrived promptly to find the vehicle fully ablaze.

Initial efforts by personnel from the Peduase Fire Post managed to contain the fire by 6:18 p.m., and assistance from the Aburi Fire Station ensured the blaze was fully extinguished by 6:20 p.m.
Fortunately, all family members escaped without injury. However, they lost several personal items, including a trunk and school supplies intended for their daughter.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) suspects the fire was caused by an electrical fault. The service used the incident to remind motorists about fire safety precautions and the importance of keeping emergency numbers readily accessible.
“This incident highlights how quickly vehicles can become life-threatening hazards,” ADO Brenya said. “We urge the public to regularly maintain their vehicles and stay vigilant on the roads.”
Residents in the area praised the swift response of the fire service, noting that the quick containment prevented the fire from spreading to nearby vegetation and homes.
The GNFS continues to advise the public to remain alert to warning signs of vehicle malfunctions, especially in older cars, and to take immediate action at the first hint of smoke or unusual odors.
