Orem, Utah – September 11, 2025 — The FBI has intensified its manhunt for the gunman who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a speaking event at Utah Valley University, revealing new details about the weapon and evidence recovered.
Officials say the suspect, described as “appearing to be of college age,” fled the scene into a nearby neighborhood immediately after the shooting on Wednesday evening.
Evidence Recovered
Authorities have since discovered a high-powered rifle believed to have been used in the attack, abandoned in a wooded area close to the university. Forensic teams are analyzing a footwear impression and what investigators described as a “forearm imprint” found near the weapon.
“We have obtained good video footage of the gunman,” an FBI spokesperson confirmed, though the agency has declined to release the footage publicly while the investigation is ongoing.
Two individuals initially detained for questioning were released without charge.
Political Reverberations
Kirk, 31, a close ally of former President Donald Trump and founder of Turning Point USA, was killed instantly as he addressed students. His assassination has sent shockwaves through political circles and sparked renewed debate about partisan violence.
In a statement, Donald Trump vowed to honor Kirk’s legacy, announcing that he will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.
“This was a despicable act of political violence,” Trump said. “Charlie was a patriot, and America will never forget his contribution to the fight for freedom.”
Security Concerns on Campus
Utah Valley University remains under tightened security, with classes temporarily suspended. Authorities have urged residents in surrounding neighborhoods to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity as the manhunt continues.
The FBI has not yet disclosed a possible motive, but officials say identifying and apprehending the suspect is their “top priority.”
