Fire Service saves residence of UG Vice Chancellor
The swift intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) averted what could have been a devastating loss at the residence of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon. The incident, which occurred late Tuesday night, drew attention from both the university community and the general public, as firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control.
According to GNFS officials, the fire was detected in one section of the residence, prompting an immediate emergency call. Within minutes, fire tenders and a specialized rescue team arrived on the scene to contain the blaze before it could spread to other parts of the building.
Prompt Response Prevents Disaster
Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the property before the fire crew arrived. The Vice Chancellor, along with members of her household, was safely evacuated as a precautionary measure. Fire officers quickly deployed hoses and used advanced fire suppression techniques to douse the flames.
“The fire was contained in record time because of the timely call and our rapid response,” a GNFS spokesperson said. “Our team ensured that no lives were lost, and property damage was kept to a minimum.”

Cause Under Investigation
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, preliminary investigations suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault. Fire officers have since cordoned off the affected area for forensic assessment.
Officials are urging households to conduct regular electrical maintenance checks to avoid similar incidents, especially as dry weather conditions often increase the risk of fires.
Relief Across the University Community

News of the successful containment sparked relief among students, staff, and alumni. Many took to social media to commend the bravery and professionalism of the fire service team.
“This could have been a tragedy, but thanks to the GNFS, our Vice Chancellor and her family are safe,” a student leader posted on X (formerly Twitter).
University authorities are expected to release an official statement soon, outlining the extent of damage and plans for repairs.
