FixTheCountry to Hold Anti-Galamsey Vigil & March in Accra to Demand Urgent Environmental Action
The pressure group FixTheCountry, led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has officially announced plans for an anti-galamsey vigil and march in Accra, aimed at protesting rampant environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
The movement’s calendar:
-
A vigil will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Revolution Square in Accra.
-
The following day, Monday, September 22, which is a national holiday, a march will take place to further draw attention to what FixTheCountry describes as an escalating “environmental crisis of urgent proportions.”
In his announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Barker-Vormawor emphasized that protecting Ghana’s environment is not tied to political seasons:
“The responsibility to protect and preserve the environment is by divine assignment, ours as a people. Our responsibility to end galamsey does not end at elections. Nor does it begin after our party loses one. This is bigger than petty politics.”
He urged all Ghanaians — from civil society to faith groups — to join in solidarity. “We call on citizens from all walks of life to stand in defence of our natural resources,” he added.
FixTheCountry has repeatedly criticized prior administrations for political interference and weak enforcement in the fight against galamsey. This upcoming mobilization underscores their belief that urgent civic pressure is necessary to force meaningful policy action.
