Tamale, Ghana – The Northern Regional Police Command has provided new information regarding the arrest of three individuals allegedly involved in the illegal transportation of restricted pharmaceutical drugs and an unlicensed firearm—both of which were ingeniously concealed within a vehicle’s spare tyre and headrest.
The suspects—Jabuni S. Mohammed, Alidu Abdul Samed, and Abdul Aziz—were apprehended near Diare, a suburb of Savelugu, during a routine night patrol operation on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
According to a statement from the police, the incident unfolded when the driver of a Nissan Hardbody pick-up truck, bearing registration number GN 2812–20, refused to stop at a checkpoint along the Tamale–Bolgatanga highway. The vehicle was being driven by Jabuni S. Mohammed.

Officers initiated a high-speed pursuit, which resulted in the suspect abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee into nearby bushes. He was captured shortly thereafter.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a deflated spare tyre stuffed with 1,399 blister foils of Tafrodol 120mg, a restricted painkiller known for its misuse in illicit drug markets. Additionally, a loaded pistol was discovered hidden within the vehicle’s headrest compartment.

Subsequent investigations led police to intercept Alidu Abdul Samed and Abdul Aziz, who were riding an unregistered motorbike believed to be en route to rendezvous with Jabuni. They were arrested on suspicion of aiding in the transportation of the contraband.
All three suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
Authorities have described the incident as a significant breach of both public health and national security, underscoring the growing menace of illegal pharmaceutical trafficking in the northern corridor.
“The concealment tactics employed point to a well-orchestrated operation aimed at evading law enforcement,” a police spokesperson stated. “We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will intensify our operations to dismantle such networks.”
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing the proliferation of unauthorized drugs and weapons, warning that traffickers will face the full rigour of the law.
