GAF Helicopter Disaster: Pilots Attempted 3 Landings Before Fatal Crash Near Obuasi
New details have emerged surrounding the tragic helicopter crash near Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which claimed multiple lives and plunged the nation into mourning.
In an exclusive interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), revealed that the ill-fated aircraft made three unsuccessful landing attempts before the crash occurred.
According to Mr. Boadi, one of the passengers, Samuel Aboagye, maintained contact with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi during the flight.
“He told him to bring his car to the airstrip. Moments later, he reported that they could not land there and advised bringing the car to Oforikrom,” Mr. Boadi recounted.
The helicopter reportedly made two failed landing attempts at the Obuasi airstrip and a third at Oforikrom before the disaster struck.
Mr. Boadi commended the swift and effective leadership of the Adansi Akrofuom District Chief Executive, Mr. Gariba, who coordinated rescue operations to retrieve victims from the challenging crash site.
He also appealed to the public to exercise restraint and compassion when discussing the tragedy, urging Ghanaians to respect the privacy and grief of the bereaved families during this difficult period.
As investigations continue, the nation remains united in mourning the loss of dedicated public servants and military personnel.
