The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has announced the establishment of a joint committee with MultiChoice Ghana to work out a reduction in DStv subscription fees.
This follows weeks of tension between the ministry and the pay-TV operator after regulators demanded a 30% slash in subscription costs.
Earlier this month, the Ministry imposed a statutory fine of GH¢10,000 per day on MultiChoice for failing to provide mandatory pricing data under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA). Officials also warned that the company risked licence suspension if prices were not reduced by September 6, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, September 5, 2025, Mr. George disclosed that the committee—comprising the ministry, the National Communications Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa—was formed at the company’s request.
“Let us be clear—they have finally accepted that there will be a reduction, and they want us to discuss the level of reduction,” he said.
He further revealed that government rejected MultiChoice’s plea for 30 days to deliberate, insisting: “Fourteen days is enough, inclusive of weekends, for us to reach this decision.”
The committee, chaired by the minister, is expected to present a price reduction strategy later this month.
