Impostor Masquerades as Interpol Agent in Alleged Extortion Scheme at Tema Port
Concerns over security at Ghana’s busiest port have resurfaced after reports emerged of an impostor posing as an international law enforcement official to extort vehicle owners at the Tema Port Golden Jubilee Terminal.
Eyewitnesses say the man, sometimes identified as “Mr. Edem,” has been spotted moving around the car park photographing newly cleared vehicles and introducing himself as an agent of either Interpol or the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). He allegedly demands cash from unsuspecting owners, threatening that their vehicles could be seized under claims they are linked to stolen goods.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Interpol, and the BNI have yet to confirm the reports or comment on whether any joint operation is taking place at the terminal. The lack of an official response has heightened concerns, given Tema Port’s history of security lapses, including the high-profile seizure of arms in 2021.
Accounts of the alleged scam have spread widely on social media platform X, where users claim the suspect operates with little resistance and has even been seen issuing warnings to port security guards. Many commenters have questioned how such an individual could move so freely within a sensitive national installation without detection.
Tema Port, which handles the bulk of Ghana’s import and export trade, has long faced scrutiny over weak enforcement and illicit activities. The latest allegations have sparked fresh calls for tighter security oversight and better coordination between state agencies to protect businesses and the public.
As of Wednesday evening, it remains unclear whether the impostor has been apprehended or whether authorities have opened an official investigation into the extortion scheme.
