Tragedy struck at Agona Asafo in the Agona East District of the Central Region when a Kia truck loaded with coconuts ploughed into a jubilant crowd during a float on Friday, leaving five people in critical condition and 13 others injured.
According to the Assembly Member for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, Ishmael Odoom, the incident occurred during the community’s annual Akwanbo Festival celebrations. The festival traditionally begins with a football gala, after which the winning team and supporters parade through the town in a jubilant float.
Mr. Odoom explained that while the float was ongoing, the Kia truck, which was carrying coconuts, suddenly drove into the large gathering. The driver reportedly failed to stop despite clear visibility of the crowd, leading to chaos and injuries.
“About 18 people were injured on the spot and rushed to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital. Unfortunately, five of them remain in critical condition,” he told reporters.
Police are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the crash, but eyewitnesses say the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle before ramming into the crowd.
The community, still reeling from the incident, has called for tighter safety measures during festival activities to prevent future occurrences.
