Man Assaulted After Disrespecting Asantehene in Viral Video
Kumasi, Ghana – A video showing a man, identified as Mustapha, hurling insults at the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has sparked widespread outrage and reportedly led to a physical assault on the individual.
In the original footage, Mustapha ridiculed the monarch’s recent directive for residents in the Ashanti Region to observe an early curfew, declaring that “only fools will obey and sleep early.” The comments quickly drew condemnation from the public, seen as both disrespectful and a direct challenge to the authority of the Asantehene.
The curfew was part of broader security measures issued by Manhyia Palace to maintain public order and curb crime in Kumasi and surrounding areas. The directive had been largely supported by residents as a necessary step to ensure safety.
Following the viral spread of the video, reports emerged that Mustapha had been physically assaulted by unknown individuals, seemingly in retaliation for his remarks. Hours later, a new video appeared on his social media accounts, in which he recanted his earlier statements and issued a public apology.
The incident underscores the deep respect afforded to traditional leaders in Ghana and highlights the risks of publicly disrespecting cultural authorities on social media. It also raises concerns about vigilante responses and the role of informal sanctions outside formal legal channels.
