Akyem-Kukurantumi, Eastern Region – Chaos erupted at the Akyem-Kukurantumi Police Station when angry residents stormed and ransacked the facility following the death of a suspect in police custody.
According to local reports, the deceased, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was arrested during a police swoop in which substances suspected to be Indian hemp were found on him. Residents allege that the suspect was brutally assaulted by a police officer identified only as Kumador, leading to his death while in detention.
Community Anger and Police Response
News of the incident sparked outrage in the town, with scores of youth mobilising to the police station to demand accountability. Witnesses said the mob forced its way into the facility, destroying property and sending officers on duty fleeing for safety.
The violent confrontation prompted the deployment of a joint team of police and National Security personnel from Koforidua, who managed to restore calm and secure the premises.
Call for Transparency
The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death remain unclear, and residents are demanding a full-scale investigation. Meanwhile, police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
The incident has heightened tensions between the police and the Kukurantumi community, reigniting long-standing concerns over alleged police brutality and accountability in custodial deaths.
