MTN Ghana Signs Landmark $2 Million Sponsorship with GFA to Back Four National Teams
Accra, Ghana – August 14, 2025
In a significant boost to the country’s football development agenda, MTN Ghana has signed a $2 million headline sponsorship deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The two-year agreement, unveiled today in Accra, will support four of Ghana’s national teams: the Black Stars, Black Queens, Black Satellites (U-20), and Black Starlets (U-17).
A United Vision for National Football
At the launch event, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to the nation’s sporting aspirations.
“Football is a passion that connects the whole country, and MTN is proud to be part of the journey to take our teams to greater heights,” Blewett noted, underscoring the sponsorship’s aim to go beyond mere funding—seeking to motivate and inspire future generations of footballers.
GFA President Kurt Okraku hailed the sponsorship as a timely and strategic investment.
“This partnership is a much-needed boost that will enhance our competitive edge on both continental and global stages,” he commented, noting the critical role such backing plays in Ghana’s football revival.
Why This Matters
-
Comprehensive Coverage: Unlike previous sponsorships that focused on a single team, this package spans across both senior and youth levels, addressing both male and female football development.
-
Strategic Timing: The deal arrives amidst a crucial period for Ghanaian football. The Black Stars are gearing up to reclaim their position in international football despite missing out on AFCON 2025. Meanwhile, the Black Queens are riding high after a bronze finish at WAFCON 2024 and have their sights set on the next WAFCON and the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
- Long-Term Spillover: Financial and logistical backing for youth teams strengthens the foundation of Ghana’s football pipeline, promising benefits for years to come.
Building on a Legacy of Support
MTN Ghana has a history of supporting football in the country. In 2022, the company signed a $2 million deal focusing solely on the Black Stars ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2024 AFCON. This continued involvement underscores MTN’s role as a steadfast partner in Ghanaian sports.
Looking Ahead
With this expanded sponsorship framework, Ghanaians will be watching closely as all four national teams prepare for upcoming qualifiers and tournaments. The Black Stars face critical matches in their World Cup qualifying campaign, while the Black Queens, Satellites, and Starlets aim to build on recent momentum. The success of this deal hinges on the outcomes on the pitch—but also on how effectively the funds are deployed.
