Minority Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, has issued a stern warning to Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, cautioning him against any attempts to undermine the authority of the ECOWAS Parliament.
According to Muntaka, any defiance of the regional body’s decisions could result in serious diplomatic consequences and the loss of privileges for Ghana’s parliamentary delegation.
The warning comes amid rising tensions between members of Ghana’s representation in the ECOWAS Parliament, particularly over issues relating to leadership selection and adherence to community protocols.
“If Afenyo-Markin chooses to defy the decision of the ECOWAS Parliament, he risks the entire Ghanaian delegation being stripped of their rights and privileges,” Muntaka warned in an interview with the press.
🔎 Power Struggles Within the ECOWAS Legislative Arm
At the heart of the controversy is an internal dispute over the rotation and nomination of Ghanaian representatives to leadership positions within the ECOWAS Parliament. Muntaka claims that the majority leader is seeking to manipulate the process to serve partisan interests, contrary to the protocol and precedents set by the regional body.
He described the development as a potential breach of the spirit of multilateral cooperation that ECOWAS represents.
“No individual, no matter how powerful, should put national credibility at risk over personal or party ambition,” Muntaka added.
⚠️ Diplomatic Consequences for Non-Compliance
The former Minority Chief Whip emphasized that ECOWAS is governed by strict rules and protocols, and any violations—especially those coming from member state delegations—can result in sanctions, including the loss of voting rights and exclusion from leadership roles.
He pointed to past examples where member states faced diplomatic backlash for breaching community norms, adding that Ghana cannot afford to be embarrassed on the international stage.
Muntaka urged Afenyo-Markin and the Majority Caucus to prioritize national and regional interest over internal party politics.
🗳️ A Call for Unity and Diplomacy
With Ghana already facing significant scrutiny on governance and democratic accountability, Muntaka’s comments come as a timely reminder of the importance of diplomacy and regional integration.
The issue is likely to spark wider debate on Ghana’s role in ECOWAS and the growing politicization of regional parliamentary delegations.
