90 Bags Intercepted Hidden Under Charcoal. In Mighty Truck
In a major breakthrough against cocoa smuggling in Ghana, the Central North Regional Police Command has intercepted a Hyundai Mighty Gold Truck smuggling 90 bags of cocoa beans concealed beneath bags of charcoal and fertilizer sacks. The interception took place on the Assin Dompim–Adukrom Road in the Assin Fosu Municipality during the early hours of Sunday, around 1:00 a.m.
According to DCOP Abraham Acquaye, the operation was executed based on actionable intelligence gathered by the Police. Upon sighting the vehicle with registration number GE-9775-24, officers signaled the driver to stop. However, the driver refused and attempted to flee, prompting a high-speed chase. He later abandoned the vehicle and escaped into the night, leaving the contraband behind.
“The cocoa beans were well concealed in fertilizer sacks and covered with charcoal to avoid detection,” DCOP Acquaye revealed during a press briefing.
Truck Seized, COCOBOD Notified
The truck has since been impounded and the Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has been officially notified to assist in ongoing investigations and future enforcement actions. Efforts are currently underway to identify and apprehend the driver and all accomplices involved in the smuggling operation.
Commendation for Law Enforcement
DCOP Acquaye commended the officers involved for their swift response, professionalism, and bravery, stressing the importance of multi-agency collaboration to protect one of Ghana’s most critical export commodities. Cocoa remains a major contributor to Ghana’s economy, and smuggling poses serious threats to revenue and market integrity.
