Kukurantumi, Eastern Region – The Ghana Police Service has temporarily closed down the Kukurantumi Police Station and withdrawn personnel after an angry mob of youth launched a violent attack on the facility on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
The unrest followed the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, popularly known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and theft. According to police, Kena was receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital prior to his death.
Mob Attack and Chaos
News of Kena’s death triggered outrage among residents, who stormed the police station and barracks, pelting officers with stones, sticks, and other weapons. The mob reportedly attempted to set the facility ablaze, forcing officers on duty to flee for safety.
A reinforcement team was later deployed to disperse the rioters and restore order, preventing further escalation of violence.
Police Assure Transparent Probe
In a statement, the Eastern Regional Police Command confirmed that senior officers have since met with Kena’s family and local leaders, assuring them of a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB), in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has launched a formal inquiry. Officials say they are reviewing available video footage of the attack and working to piece together the events that led to the chaos.
Warning Against Violence
Authorities have strongly condemned the attack on the police station, vowing to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved. The Command urged residents to seek lawful and peaceful avenues to express their grievances rather than resorting to violence against security agencies.
The temporary closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station has raised concerns among residents over community safety, even as investigations into both Kena’s death and the mob assault continue.
