President Mahama has intervened to calm renewed tensions between the Gonja and Brifor communities in the Sawla-Bole area of the Savannah Region.
The President, who returned from a state visit to Singapore over the weekend, was briefed on the conflict by the National Security Coordinator and the Interior Minister. While abroad, he also held a phone conversation with the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Jira Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, on measures to promote peace and reconciliation.
To de-escalate the situation, President Mahama has dispatched a high-level delegation from the Interior Ministry, led by Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak, to engage the Yagbonwura and other key stakeholders. Additional security reinforcements, including police and military personnel, have been deployed to the conflict zone to restore calm.
The President has appealed to all factions to support mediation efforts and refrain from acts that could further inflame tensions. He directed the delegation to work closely with the Savannah Regional Security Council, traditional leaders, and community actors to encourage dialogue and achieve a lasting settlement.
President Mahama emphasized that government remains committed to ensuring peace and stability in the area, stressing that reconciliation is the surest path to development and coexistence.
