Rural Banks Reassure Depositors After Armed Robbery Gang Dismantled
The Association of Rural Bankers has reassured depositors that their funds remain secure following the recent dismantling of a notorious armed robbery gang that targeted rural banks across five regions.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on September 25, Association President Eric Appiah welcomed the police operation but stressed that rural banks have stepped up vigilance to prevent future incidents.
“Our members are more vigilant. We have strengthened our surveillance systems, retrained our internal security, and are working closely with the police to ensure maximum safety for both staff and clients,” Appiah said.
He emphasized that despite attempts by armed robbers to overpower security personnel and access vaults, no customer deposits were lost during the spate of attacks.
“The public should continue to have confidence in us. Their deposits are safe, fully insured, and we remain committed to serving communities—even in areas where other financial institutions may not want to operate,” he added.
Appiah further noted that the Association is intensifying staff training and enhancing coordination with the Ghana Police Service to secure vulnerable areas.
The assurances follow a police operation led by Inspector-General of Police Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, which resulted in the arrest of multiple suspects and the recovery of weapons and stolen property. The syndicate had been active across the Ashanti, Ahafo, Western, Central, and Eastern regions.
