Sam George Engages Yango, DVLA on Tech Partnerships to Modernise Ghana’s Transport Sector
Accra, August 16, 2025 – Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed plans to leverage technology partnerships to modernise the country’s transport sector, while affirming that operational oversight will remain firmly under the Ministry of Transport.
Speaking at a high-level stakeholder meeting with officials from Yango, the Ministry of Transport, and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) on Friday, August 15, Mr. George stressed that Ghana’s approach to digitising the sector would be guided by strong collaboration across relevant agencies.
“We will ensure that any relevant technological conversation is well aligned, but the Transport Ministry will lead on operational matters,” he stated.
Transport Ministry Welcomes Proposals
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe welcomed Yango’s early-stage proposals and urged the ride-hailing company to formally submit its plans for government review. He highlighted the government’s electric vehicle policy and roadmap, noting that the administration was prepared to embrace technology-driven partnerships that can enhance transport infrastructure, improve service delivery, and expand mobility options nationwide.
Both ministers described Friday’s meeting as an introductory platform, with follow-up engagements expected to focus on a detailed assessment of Yango’s proposals and their possible integration into Ghana’s transport system.
High-Level Participation
The session was attended by Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Chief Director of the Transport Ministry Mrs. Mabel Asi Sagoe, and DVLA’s Acting Director of Research, Business and Innovation, Mr. Abraham Zata.
Representing Yango were Shashi Singh, COO for MENA; Zanyiwe Asare, VP of Public Policy, Africa; Tom Ofonime, Country Head for Ghana; and Mohammed Suhuyini Zakaria, Public Policy Consultant for Ghana.
Outlook
The potential collaboration marks another step in Ghana’s efforts to position itself as a leader in digital innovation and sustainable transport in West Africa. Industry watchers say the initiative could introduce smarter mobility solutions, streamline licensing and regulation, and support Ghana’s transition toward eco-friendly transport models.
