Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has condemned the decision of the Accra Circuit Court to remand Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye and Bono Regional NPP Chairman, for a second consecutive week.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Kpebu described Abronye’s continued detention over a misdemeanour charge as unlawful, unjust, and a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy.
“This Is Not Why We Voted for NDC”
Kpebu, known for his strong advocacy on human rights and constitutionalism, was blunt in his criticism of the government:
“We must let the Attorney-General and IGP Yohuno know that this is not lawful. We didn’t vote for the NDC for this type of governance, and I cannot be part of this type of government,” he stressed.
Call for Bail Instead of Detention
The lawyer argued that if Abronye’s comments were indeed offensive, the case should be allowed to proceed in court — but with bail granted.
“If they don’t want to forgive him, they can grant him bail as the case proceeds. When the verdict comes and it is too much, then we talk about it,” Kpebu added.
He warned that keeping Abronye in custody over a misdemeanour risked undermining judicial fairness:
“If in a misdemeanour case Abronye cannot secure bail, then it means the verdict on my Kpebu number 2 case in 2016 is void and useless. As citizens, we must get up and resist this, or else it will lead to tyranny.”
Appeal to the Courts and Police
Kpebu urged the police to return to court by Monday to signal the end of their investigations and allow bail to be granted. Failing that, he called on Abronye’s legal team to take the matter to the Human Rights Court.
“This is wrong and a sad day for our democracy. We must all rally support and speak against this because we cannot retrogress as a nation,” he concluded.
Background
Abronye was first remanded on September 10, following his arrest on Monday, September 8, over what the police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.”
