Three people have died following the collapse of a mining pit at Manso Takorase in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, October 1, 2025, when six miners were working in an abandoned pit that caved in, trapping all of them underground.
Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Assembly Member for Manso Takorase, Bonsu Dominic, said that a rescue team managed to retrieve three of the miners alive, while the remaining three were found dead.
“We were able to save three of them, but unfortunately, the other three couldn’t make it,” he said.
The Amansie enclave has become a hotspot for both legal and illegal small-scale mining, and has witnessed several similar accidents in recent years. The latest tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of mining regulations and greater emphasis on safety protocols for artisanal miners.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital morgue, while police and local authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
This incident comes barely weeks after a similar mining pit disaster at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District, where seven people died and five others sustained injuries.
