Tragedy at Gbawe: Two Children Found Dead in Open Drain After Going Missing
Residents of Gbawe Zero Machandi Estate in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality have been thrown into mourning after the lifeless bodies of two children were discovered in an uncovered drainage system.
The victims, aged five and seven, were reported missing on Sunday, August 24, after they were last seen playing near the drain. Their bodies were later recovered on Monday, August 25, 2025, from the open channel, sparking outrage in the community.
Community Blames Authorities
Eyewitnesses and residents described the uncovered drain as a long-standing “death trap,” accusing local authorities of negligence despite several complaints.
“We have made countless appeals for this drainage to be covered or fixed, but no one listened. Now, two innocent lives are gone,” a distressed resident told Adom News.
The tragedy has renewed calls for urgent action, with fears that the situation could worsen as the rainy season sets in. Erosion from the uncovered drain is already threatening the main road in the area, raising safety concerns for both children and motorists.
Calls for Immediate Intervention
Community leaders are demanding that the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly and relevant agencies act swiftly to prevent further loss of lives.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by uncovered drains across Accra, where poor drainage infrastructure has been linked to frequent accidents, erosion, and flooding.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
