Accra, Ghana – Ahead of the Akwatia parliamentary by-election, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has urged constituents to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako, emphasizing President John Dramani Mahama’s personal backing.
Addressing party supporters in Akwatia on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Mr. Debrah conveyed the president’s message directly to voters. “John Mahama says I should tell you, the people of Akwatia, that he wants to work with the NDC candidate Bernard Bediako in his government,” he stated.
The appeal forms part of the NDC’s intensified campaign ahead of the by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, which has attracted significant attention from both the ruling party and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mr. Debrah encouraged constituents to translate their support into votes, stressing that an NDC victory would strengthen collaboration between the government and the people of Akwatia in advancing local development initiatives. The by-election follows the passing of the area’s late Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
Polls Indicate Tight Race
Recent independent polls suggest Bernard Bediako holds a slight edge over his NPP rival, Solomon Asumadu. A survey conducted by Sanity Africa between August 1 and 27 shows Bediako leading with 52.3% compared to Asumadu’s 47.7%, reflecting a narrow 4.6-point advantage.
Similarly, Global Info Analytics projects Bediako with 53% support against 47% for Asumadu, reinforcing the NDC candidate’s frontrunner status as voters prepare to head to the polls.
With heightened political activity and keen public interest, the Akwatia by-election is shaping up to be a closely watched contest, with both parties vying for a decisive mandate from the electorate.
